What is TAG/AAU?
TAG/AAU is an entry level, competitive program for girls who want a more challenging experience with the sport of gymnastics. Several small, local and state competitions are recommended as participation in this program.
How did TAG/AAU get started?
Several years ago, a small group of Oklahoma Coaches who were concerned that the USAG competitive programs were too extreme, got together and designed this program as a way to introduce intermediate level gymnasts to the wonderful sport of competitive gymnastics. They named it TAG because they wanted it to represent a program that was tagging after the USAG Jr. Olympic Program. Now, most every gym in Oklahoma participates in the TAG/AAU meets. It's becoming as popular as the USAG JO age group program.
What level of experience, or reason do girls need to have, to join the TAG/AAU program?
The TAG/AAU program is made up of mostly intermediate level gymnasts. Girls that have from Gold Nuggets in the recreational gymnastics program, are the most common group of girls that join the TAG/AAU program. Another common reason to join has been the need to be further challenged. The TAG/AAU staff is always looking for girls who might want an opportunity to tryout. Contact the office to schedule a tryout.
What's the difference between TAG/AAU and the USAG Program?
The biggest difference is cost, time, commitment and philosophy. Unlike the USAG programs, TAG/AAU levels are restricted by the amount of hours per week they are allowed to practice (6 hours per week maximum). This restricted commitment keeps the TAG/AAU programs evenly matched throughout the state when they go to competitions. This is important because the TAG/AAU program wasn't designed to be a highly competitive program; rather it is intended to expose children to the joy of gymnastic competitions.
Do the TAG/AAU girls move up to USAG team at some point?
Yes. We use the TAG/AAU Program as a feeder program to our USAG Team. The USAG team coaches will periodically evaluate the Level 4 TAG/AAU members for advancement. Our TAG/AAU coaches and USAG coaches are trained in the same techniques. This helps ensure a seamless transition from TAG/AAU team to USAG team.
